The Astra company produced cooking oil and fats on this Steffisburg site from 1917 until production ceased in 1992. Following this, the Astra site remained largely unused for over 5 years, except for some temporary activities.
Following a referendum in April 1999, where 90% of Steffisburg's residents approved rezoning, an architectural competition was initiated. The winning submission, named "Quattro stagioni", met all criteria and is hailed as a "remarkable architectural triumph". The project's goal was to rejuvenate the Astra site and develop a community that would unite different generations.
The development of the Astra site began with a groundbreaking ceremony in 2000, proceeding in two phases. This redevelopment saw the construction of four apartment buildings, seven terraced houses, two semi-detached houses, and one detached house on the former industrial parcel. It also encompasses 19 apartments for elderly residents.

The Astra site is located in the middle of Steffisburg, surrounded by schools and various shopping facilities. The City of Thun with its wide selection of shopping and leisure facilities can be reached in just a few minutes. The development is close to the town centre, but in a quiet neighbourhood with convenient connections to the motorway and public transport.
Nestled in the pre-Alpine hilly landscape at the gateway to the Bernese Oberland, Steffisburg is an open-minded, attractive town with over 15,000 inhabitants. Steffisburg is one of the largest municipalities in the canton of Bern. The direct connection to the A6 motorway, optimal public transport, and proximity to the town of Thun (reachable in a few minutes) as well as Interlaken and Bern (approx. 30 minutes) make Steffisburg an attractive place to live and work. Lake Thun, the River Aare and the renowned ski resorts in the Bernese Oberland offer summer and winter sports attractions nearby. Steffisburg lies in a former bay of the prehistoric Wendelsee lake. During heavy rainfall, the Zulg River, originating in Innereriz, often became a raging river, filled in and created a triangle of land over the years. Steffisburg borders on the municipalities of Thun, Homberg, Fahrni, and Heimberg.
