The Astra company produced cooking oil and fats on this site in Steffisburg from 1917 until production was discontinued in 1992. Apart from a few temporary uses, the Astra site lay dormant for over 5 years.
After a referendum in April 1999, in which 90% of the people of Steffisburg approved rezoning, an architectural competition was announced. The winning project, entitled "Quattro stagioni", fulfilled all requirements and can be described as a "great architectural success". The aim of the development was to breathe life back into the Astra site and to create a settlement that would bring generations closer together.
In 2000, the groundbreaking ceremony was held for the development of the Astra site, which was subsequently built in two stages. A total of four apartment buildings, seven terraced houses, two semi-detached houses and one detached house were built on the former industrial site. It also includes 19 flats for senior citizens.

The Astra site is located in the middle of Steffisburg. Schools and various shopping facilities can be found nearby. The City of Thun with its wide selection of shopping and leisure facilities can be reached in just a few minutes. The development is close to the town centre, but in a quiet neighbourhood with convenient connections to the motorway and public transport.
Nestled in the pre-Alpine hilly landscape at the gateway to the Bernese Oberland, Steffisburg is an open-minded, attractive town with over 15,000 inhabitants. Steffisburg is one of the largest municipalities in the canton of Bern. The direct connection to the A6 motorway, optimal public transport, and proximity to the town of Thun (reachable in a few minutes) as well as Interlaken and Bern (approx. 30 minutes) make Steffisburg an attractive place to live and work. Summer and winter sports attractions are always within reach - thanks to Lake Thun, the Aare River and well-known ski resorts in the Bernese Oberland. Steffisburg lies in a former bay of the prehistoric Wendelsee lake. During heavy rainfall, the Zulg River, originating in Innereriz, often became a raging river, filled in and created a triangle of land over the years. Steffisburg borders on the municipalities of Thun, Homberg, Fahrni, and Heimberg.
